It may be more than just coincidence that Walgreens has decided to really blow the doors off of retail pharmacy in the same city that screams horsepower every year over Memorial Day weekend. Walgreens is building a market-driven, consumer-focused retail health destination center that is focused on driving improved healthcare value for customers. And even as those Indy 500 drivers are chugging their milk at the Brickyard, Walgreens' pharmacists will be celebrating a victory of their own as they and their customers help redefine what “drug store” means in shopper parlance.

DSN recently talked with COPD Foundation founder and president John Walsh about the organization's new leadership. In March, the COPD Foundation took over leadership for Drive4COPD, which aims to screen people for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a collective term for emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which the group estimates to affect 24 million Americans who may have it but don't know it.

One of the first lessons in life that children learn is that getting sick isn’t fun, and going to the pharmacy isn’t too exciting either. In 2004, pharmacist Charles Tabouchirani decided to change that by opening Cherry’s Pharmacy, a store that specializes in dealing with children. The store is small — 550 sq. ft. — but a bright mural, a collection of toys and an electric model train that travels in a loop along the wall make an inviting waiting room for Cherry’s core customers.

According to Biotab Nutraceuticals chief marketing officer Robert Wilhovsky, there is seasonality within sleep aids. Biotab fielded the No. 3 sleep aid Alteril in food, drug and mass (without Walmart) with dollar growth of more than 126% for the 12 weeks ended April 15, according to SymphonyIRI Group data. Drug Store News caught up with Wilhovsky to talk about how Biotab approaches the overall sleep category, and how the company helps drive its sleep aid solution through key selling periods.

With its famously competitive pharmacy market and diverse population, New York City has long been a hotspot for new store formats. One of the products of this dynamic environment is Tisane Pharmacy in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a store that seeks to blend Old World and New World. Pharmacy school classmates Inna Shafir and Yelena Yoffe opened the store last Labor Day with the idea of creating a pharmacy that emphasized natural care and comfort. Both also own pharmacies elsewhere in the city.
