Walgreens has brought the latest example of its flagship retail pharmacy to life in Chicago, tantalizing its hometown crowd with departments most shoppers wouldn't normally associate with a pharmacy — fully stocked sushi bar, quick-and-fresh deli offerings, a self-serve yogurt bar adjacent to a juice bar that along with the healthy-for-you selection of juices offers the "double-rich chocolate malted milk" that the retailer invented in 1922.

On Sunday, Jan. 1, Walgreens' contract with Express Scripts expired, and millions of Walgreens customers covered by ESI were forced to either move their pharmacy business to another pharmacy in the Express Script network or come up with some other way to stick with Walgreens. DSN editor Rob Eder on Tuesday interviewed Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson on what the company is doing to hold on to those customers and to appeal to payers, and what the potential ESI-Medco deal could mean.

Navarro Discount Pharmacy recently celebrated the opening of its 30th store in Homestead, Fla., in the Homestead Pavilion Shopping Center. The store further differentiates the retailer from its competition and caters to the Hispanic market with its mix of ethnic products, such as chili peppers, piñatas and Jumex nectars. For added convenience and improved customer service, the pharmacy department has been moved to the front of the new 11,280-sq.-ft. store.

Winn-Dixie’s latest transformational remodel in Miami is a store of the future with a merengue twist, featuring a strong Hispanic influence. In addition to bilingual signage, Winn-Dixie incorporates the regional flair with features like a full-service Cuban café replete with such Spanish pastries as empanadas, as well as a wide variety of Hispanic products. Winn-Dixie’s transformational remodel initiative — which incorporates upscale fresh departments, including produce, deli, meat and seafood — generates between $400 and $500 in sales per sq. ft.

For Rite Aid, 50 is the magic number this year.


In September, the drug chain marked its 50 years in business with a six-month campaign to promote its focus on health and wellness, kicking off a nationwide tour near its Camp Hill, Pa., headquarters. From there, the tour visited Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Portland, Ore., and other cities.

Coming off a multi-year overhaul of its merchandising strategy and discount store format, Family Dollar is making good on its commitment to be “a compelling place to shop for our customers.” The big discount chain — which now numbers more than 7,200 stores in 45 states — is driving new business with an expanded and vastly more appealing product presentation, new and more attractive fixtures and in-line sets, broad and deep merchandise mix and improved department adjacencies.

Costco is an international chain of membership warehouses that present one of the largest product category selections to be found under one roof. This Costco, which is in New York City’s East Harlem, is a bit unique given its urban setting.

An aisle of OTC products in a California 99 Cents Only Stores location complements departments with party products, fresh produce, deli and frozen foods, as well as other general merchandise. The deep-discount retailer currently has 298 stores, primarily in California but with some locations in Texas, Arizona and Nevada.

Giant Carlisle's pharmacy counter in Linglestown, Pa., is located near the right-hand side entrance, adjacent to the bakery. That positioning gives consumers looking to just utilize the pharmacy services an easy-in, easy-out convenience. And for shoppers coupling the grocery trip with the pharmacy trip, they can pick up their prescriptions just before checking out.
