The American Pharmacists Association Foundation announced the 2020-2021 recipients of the Incentive Grants for Practitioner Innovation in Pharmaceutical Care. Awarded annually, 30 pharmacists and student pharmacists were selected to receive the $1000 incentive grants that provide seed funds to initiate or sustain innovative community-based projects that advance pharmacist-delivered patient care services.

Established in 1994, the Incentive Grants for Practitioner Innovation in Pharmaceutical Care is the longest-running APhA Foundation program. To date, funding for more than 650 Incentive Grant projects has been awarded for pharmacists to implement new ways to improve the health outcomes for thousands of patients in communities across the country.

“We value our collaboration with the Community Pharmacy Foundation and other supporters in championing innovative ideas that highlight pharmacists as accessible and essential health care practitioners serving the needs of individuals and communities. This year’s recipients are implementing projects that address patient care needs and advance public health needs,” said APhA Foundation executive director, Mitchel Rothholz.

The Incentive Grant topics are wide-ranging and address some of the country’s most current health issues which this year, includes COVID-19 especially as it relates to attitudes and the provision of testing and vaccination services. Other subject matter includes the “Perception of Telehealth Services Compared with In-Person Pharmacist Led Diabetes Education in the Community Pharmacy Setting,” and the “Effectiveness and Feasibility of a Pharmacist-Led Culturally-Tailored Tobacco Cessation Program for Transgender and Gender Diverse Patients.”

The Practitioner Innovation in Pharmaceutical Care incentive grants are supported through the Community Pharmacy Foundation, the Daniel A. Herbert Incentive Grant Endowment, and proceeds from the APhA Foundation Annual Fund. The Immunization Incentive Grants are underwritten through the APhA Foundation Immunization Fund.
