  • FDA declines to approve Iluvien

    ATLANTA — The Food and Drug Administration declined to approve a treatment for diabetic eye disease made by Alimera Sciences, the drug maker said Dec. 23.

    In its complete response letter, the FDA requested additional safety and efficacy data for the drug, Iluvien (fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal insert), a treatment for diabetic macular edema, a problem that commonly affects people with diabetes.

    MUMBAI, India — The Food and Drug Administration approved three drugs made by Glenmark Generics last month and gave tentative approval to a fourth, the Indian generic drug maker said.

  • Chocolate, peanut butter unite in new Snickers bar

    HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. — Mars Chocolate is pairing its classic Snickers candy with peanut butter.

    Snickers Peanut Butter Squared boasts classic Snickers taste, which includes peanuts, caramel, nougat and milk chocolate, but also possesses the rich decadence of peanut butter. Each 1.78-oz. singles pack includes two delicious square-shaped bars and sells for a suggested retail price of 89 cents.

  • New strength of Intelence gets regulatory approval

    TITUSVILLE, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved an update to the label of a Johnson & Johnson drug for HIV, the company said Monday.

    Tibotec Therapeutics, a subsidiary of J&J, said the FDA approved a 200-mg formulation of Intelence (etravirine) for treating HIV in patients who have taken previous treatments and whose virus has become resistant to antiretroviral drugs.

  • GE, Intel launch new joint telehealth venture to broaden seniors’ independent living choices

    FAIRFIELD, Conn., and SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A new joint healthcare venture between GE and Intel was launched on Monday, and both companies promise it will improve the quality of life for seniors.

    The new company, called Intel-GE Care Innovations, “will develop technologies that support healthy, independent living at home and in senior housing communities,” both firms said. Care Innovations already has installed an executive team and board of managers “to support the new company’s transition and future growth,” according to the statement.

  • Sunstar Americas rolls out Gum Soft-Picks in new package sizes

    CHICAGO — Sunstar Americas, a maker of Gum and Butler brand products, is offering its Gum Soft-Picks in new 15- and 80-count packages.

    Gum Soft-Picks have 76 soft, flexible rubber bristles that slide between teeth to remove food and gently massage gums. According to the company, Gum Soft-Picks are safe to use on dental implants, bridges, crowns and orthodontics.

    To date, Gum Soft-Picks have been offered only in a package of 40, retailing for $3.49. Now Sunstar is offering a new 15-count package for $1.50 and an 80-count package for $5.99.

  • Purple Stuff expands retail distribution

    TOMBALL, Texas — A relaxation/focus soda brand has expanded its market reach.

    The Purple Stuff family of beverages has gained retail distribution in 1,264 stores, including convenience stores across the southern United States, according to Funktional Beverages, the brand's manufacturer.

    The sodas, which launched in 2008, are available in Sippin' Citrus, Berry Calming, Classic Grape and Lean Apple flavors.

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores on Monday introduced a smart phone application for its customers that will help them locate the closest Winn-Dixie, allow them to view the weekly circular and sales for that specific store, and create and manage shopping lists that both sync with computers and can be shared with other users.
