Amazon grows fulfillment capabilities in 2 states

SEATTLE — Amazon is making moves to bolster its fulfillment capabilities in two different areas of the country with its latest distribution centers — one in Fresno, Calif. and one in Jefferson, Ga.

Amazon is opening its second Georgia distribution center with the 850,000-sq.-ft. Jefferson facility, which will employ 1,000 full-time employees. The fulfillment center will pick, pack and ship large items, including household furniture, sporting equipment and gardening tools, among other merchandise. The facility will be the second in Georgia’s Jackson County, and the fourth in the state.

“Georgia has been a great place to do business for Amazon, and we look forward to adding a new fulfillment center to better serve our customers in the region,” said Akash Chauhan, Amazon’s VP of North American operations.

Also this week the company opened its fifth distribution center in California’s central valley. The 855,000-sq.-ft. facility will specialize in handling smaller-sized items such as books, electronic devices and children’s toys.

Amazon currently operates three fulfillment centers in Tracy and Patterson, and a fourth facility under construction in Sacramento. Amazon also has six other California-based distribution centers. These facilities reside in San Bernardino, Redlands, Moreno Valley, Rialto, Eastvale and Newark.

“We are very excited to expand our network into Fresno and throughout the San Joaquin Valley as a region,” said Akash Chauhan, Amazon’s VP of North American Operations. “There are several factors we consider when deciding on where to place a new fulfillment center. Most importantly, we look to see where we can improve Prime benefits with faster shipping speeds for customers, and where there is a dedicated workforce that can raise the bar of our operational excellence. We know we’ll find talent in abundance in Fresno to join the Amazon team.”a
