Supervalu sells Connecticut Shaw's stores

2/16/2010

MINNEAPOLIS Supervalu is selling its Shaw's grocery stores in Connecticut, the company announced Friday.

The buyers include Wakefern, which operates 190 ShopRite supermarkets in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, and Ahold’s Stop & Shop division. Wakefern will take 11 of the 18 stores; Stop & Shop will take five. Supervalu is still shopping around the two remaining stores.

Supervalu still operates 176 Shaw’s stores in five other New England states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Supervalu plans to add about 100 new stores this year, with plans to focus on its Sav-A-Lot banner — as many as 50 new Sav-A-Lots are planned for this year and 100 more in 2011.
