Wegmans to open store in the nation’s capital

5/22/2017

WASHINGTON — Wegmans will open its first Washington D.C. store, the company announced May 21 during the International Council of Shopping Centers annual Recon meeting in Las Vegas.

According to various news reports, Wegmans will be moving into the soon-to-be former Fannie Mae headquarters. The Wegmans site will encompass 80,000 sq. ft. smaller than other Wegmans locations that generally encompass 150,000 sq. ft.

It is not yet known if the Washington, D.C., location will have a pharmacy.

According to the Washington Business Journal, Wegmans will operate a standalone restaurant above the location, as it does at some upstate New York stores. The news outlet added Wegmans has yet to determine branding for the 6,000-sq.-ft. restaurant.

Rochester, N.Y-based Wegmans cannot break ground until Fannie Mae completes its move to its new headquarters. The news source estimated the earliest Wegmans could open the store in the nation’s capital would be late 2021.
