4/1/2009

ALEXANDRIA, Va. The National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced new additions to its government affairs and public policy department and to the marketing, communications and media relations department.

Marc D. Schloss will join NACDS as director of federal government affairs, and Stephen E. Schatz is the new director of media relations.

Schloss brings an extensive legislative and political affairs background with him to NACDS. He served as a legislative aide to Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and also worked as a deputy director at the Democratic National Committee. Following those positions, Schloss worked as the finance COO for Senator Evan Bayh’s (D-IN) All America PAC. Most recently, Schloss worked at the Center for American Progress and prior to that managed the political action committee at Van Scoyoc Associates.

“[Marc’s] legislative and political expertise will further enhance NACDS’ strategic advocacy and government affairs activities with Congress and the Administration,” said NACDS president and CEO Steven C. Anderson.

Meanwhile, Schatz served as deputy press secretary for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, where he coordinated media activities, including extensive radio campaigns and media events for Administration officials on such issues as methamphetamine abuse.

Schatz previously served as communications director for the Darren White for Congress campaign in Albuquerque, NM, and also spearheaded communications for Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN). Prior to his Washington, DC experience, Schatz worked for his hometown newspaper, the Queens Tribune in New York.

“He will help us tell the story of pharmacies as the ‘face of neighborhood healthcare,’ and continue NACDS’ remarkable success of not just talking about pharmacy’s value within the pharmacy community, but externally among the nation’s opinion leaders and decision makers,” Anderson said of Schatz.
