Report: Pfizer, Teva vie for German generic drug maker

NEW YORK Two drug companies are in a race to buy a German generic drug maker, according to published reports.

German business media reported this week that Pfizer, the world’s biggest drug maker, and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, the world’s biggest generic drug company, are trying to acquire Ratiopharm.

According to the reports, the company could come with a price tag of $4 billion. Drug Store News reported in 2009 that the company had been put up for sale following the suicide of its owner, Adolf Merckle, along with the Merckle-owned drug wholesaler Phoenix.
