Sandoz launches generic antibiotic
PRINCETON, N.J. The generics arm of drug maker Novartis has launched a generic version of a prescription antibiotic.
Sandoz announced Wednesday that it had launched cefpodoxime proxetil tablets in the 100 mg and 200 mg strengths. The tablets treat mild to moderate infections caused by Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, such as ear infections, sore throats and sinusitis.
The tablets are a generic version of Pfizer’s Vantin, which had sales of $15.8 million for the 12 months ending in February, according to IMS Health data. Ranbaxy Labs, Aurobindo Pharma and Orchid Healthcare also make generic versions.
