Pharmasave to provide HBP screenings in May

5/11/2018
In support of Hypertension Month in Canada this May, Pharmasave locations across Canada will provide patient education and opportunities for blood pressure screening.

“Knowing your blood pressure numbers is the first step towards maintaining or achieving healthy blood pressure”, Allison Nourse, Pharmasave national director, pharmacy innovation, said. “Hypertension is often unnoticed and untreated because there are no symptoms. During Hypertension Month, pharmacists have a great opportunity to help people control their blood pressure by providing screening, counsellling, resources and products to help reduce the risks of hypertension.”

High blood pressure affects more than 7.5 million Canadians and another 7.4 million have elevated blood pressure that will advance unless some lifestyle changes are made, the Vancouver, British Columbia-based pharmacy operator noted. Almost 80% of premature heart disease and stroke is preventable and pharmacists can support people in developing healthier habits to reduce risks of hypertension.

Modifiable risk factors such as diet, exercise and smoking can be altered through lifestyle changes to reduce risks of hypertension. Studies show that pharmacists provide a real and significant benefit to both patient health and increased collaboration with other healthcare professionals through screening, education and hypertension management, Pharmasave added.
