Steve Anderson calls on NACDS members to lead through disruption
Steve Anderson, president and CEO of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, opened his speech with a tribute to Jim Whitman, honoring his decades of leadership and impact at NACDS. Transitioning into today's challenges, Anderson described a world of disruption and political division but emphasized that the industry must remain focused on what matters: improving lives and strengthening healthcare access. He stressed the urgent need for healthcare disruption, pointing to America’s poor outcomes despite high spending and called on pharmacies to lead this change.
Key issues like PBM reform, tariffs and healthcare legislation were outlined, with Anderson urging immediate Congressional action. He detailed NACDS' successful advocacy for pharmacy reimbursement, vaccine access and pharmacist services, showcasing recent wins across state and federal levels. He also celebrated the growing strength of initiatives like Nourish My Health, which has partnered with organizations like AARP and the American Cancer Society.
Anderson highlighted emerging priorities like data interoperability and the responsible use of AI in pharmacy, positioning NACDS at the forefront of healthcare innovation. As he concluded, he reminded members that NACDS has thrived through decades of national change, and today’s work would once again shape the future: "Individually, we are one rock. Together, we’re an ocean."
