Walmart offers employees another bonus, plans to close on Thanksgiving

Walmart is giving its hourly employees another round of cash bonuses. It’s also closing its stores on Thanksgiving Day, which falls on Nov. 26 this year. 

“We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up,” said John Furner, president and CEO of Walmart U.S. “We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones. We are certainly thankful to our people for all of their efforts.”

The retail giant will spend another $428 million on bonuses for its workers, with a $300 bonus for full-time hourly employees, a $150 bonus for part-time and temporary employees. Drivers, managers and assistant managers at stores, clubs, distribution centers and other areas of the business will also receive a bonus.

“Our associates have been working at an incredible pace, they’ve solved problems, and they’ve set an amazing example for others,” said Furner. “To further appreciate their incredible work, we are pleased to share another special cash bonus this summer.”

Walmart’s U.S. employees (excluding salaried office associates) employed by the company as of July 31 will qualify for the bonus, which will pay out on Aug. 20. This is the third special bonus Walmart has given to workers in 2020, bringing the total spent on bonuses to $1.1 billion so far this year in addition to the regular incentive the chain provides to frontline associates on a quarterly basis.

Walmart said its namesake stores and Sam’s Club locations will operate normal hours on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Information for store and club hours on Friday, Nov. 27, will be shared at a later date.
