The American Pharmacists Association Foundation today announced Olivia Welter as the 2021-2022 Knowlton Center executive fellow in association management and leadership. The year-long fellowship begins in June and offers a broad range of association management experiences including opportunities to participate in priority APhA Foundation and APhA initiatives.

Established in 2008, the current incarnation of the executive fellowship program was made possible with the support of the Calvin and Orsula Knowlton Foundation through the Center for Pharmacist-Based Health Solutions. The Knowltons are committed to preparing the next generation of pharmacy leaders.

“We welcome Olivia to the team and within the APhA enterprise-wide efforts to advance the pharmacy profession,” said APhA Foundation executive director, Mitchel Rothholz. “Her training and experiences will enhance her project implementation, management and leadership skills, and knowledge in organizational management and operations, advocacy and constituent engagement.”

Welter will receive her PharmD from Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, in Des Moines, Iowa. Throughout her pharmacy education, she has been an active member of the Iowa Pharmacy Association, serving on policy committees and as their executive intern in association management. This involvement piqued her interest in pharmacy advocacy and led her to complete an internship with the Iowa House of Representatives.

"I am thrilled to be joining a team of thought leaders and pharmacy innovators at the APhA Foundation, and throughout APhA. I look forward to a year of learning, professional growth, and connecting with our membership." Welter said.

Welter also is active in her school’s chapter of APhA-ASP previously chairing their Generation Rx patient care project. In this role, Olivia focused on educating health professionals and community members on the role of the pharmacist in combatting the opioid epidemic.

APhA also announced that six student pharmacists have been named to its 2021-2022 class of executive residencies for the association.

The APhA Executive Residency Program was designed to provide pharmacists with training and experience in the fundamentals of association management to support APhA’s vision, mission, and brand identity as the leading professional organization representing pharmacists in all practice settings. Residents contribute to APhA’s strategic priorities and operations through collaborations with staff teams across the organization.

The members of 2021-2022 class of executive residents are:

  • Aiya Almogaber, from the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy in Columbia, SC. She will serve in APhA’s practice department during her residency;
  • Brittany Botescu, from the Notre Dame of Maryland University School of Pharmacy in Baltimore, MD. She will serve in APhA’s practice department during her residency;
  • Johanna Katroscik, from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in Minneapolis, MN. She will serve in APhA’s publications and education departments during her residency;
