Costco’s Q2 misses on sales, delivers on earnings

Costco Wholesale reported sales that missed the Street amid fierce competition to attract shoppers in the grocery space, but its earnings topped expectations.

Costco is opening a store on August 27 in Shanghai’s Minhang neighborhood district.

Liquid I.V. announced that it has launched its new passion fruit flavor at Costco warehouses across the nation.

The membership club operator appears to have found a balance between its compelling in-store offerings and the convenience of delivery, which it offers in partnership with Instacart and other third-party delivery firms.

Costco’s earnings rose to $889 million, and it raised the minimum starting wage for store workers in the United States and Canada from $14.50 to $15.50 an hour.

Fortune magazine's "World's Most Admired Companies" list includes pharmacy chains and mass retailers among its ranks.

Costco's earnings climbed more than 19% in the first quarter and revenue rose 10.2% to $35.07 billion, as construction at its first location in China is underway.

For its fourth quarter Costco's same-store sales rose 9.2%, net sales rose 5% to $43.4 billion and same-store sales rose 9.5%.

The nation’s leading warehouse club operator continues to push into new markets with a determined expansion program both in the United States and internationally. In the process, Costco Wholesale also is extending its reach into the market for pharmacy and preventive health services, surging past the 500 mark in total pharmacies operating in the United States and expanding its menu of health screenings, immunizations and clinical-care offerings.

Key companies on the list, in descending order, were Amazon (3), Costco (12), were CVS Health (27), and Target (39), Walmart (42) and Publix (49).

Chronic care management was the focus of a panel at the DSN Industry Issues Summit in New York City, at which much of the discussion centered on challenges related to diabetes, and the role pharmacy can play in keeping patients healthy.

The warehouse club chain took the No. 1 spot by paying well above the typical salary that other retail companies pay, even for entry-level workers, according to Indeed.

Charles “Charlie” Burnett, a longtime Costco pharmacy executive, passed away early in the morning on June 1, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced Friday. Burnett is being remembered for his work as a pharmacy pioneer who helped build and grow Costco’s pharmacy business.

During his lifetime, Burnett became the only person to win both of NACDS’ highest honors — the Sheldon W. Fantle Lifetime Achievement Award and the Harold W. Pratt Award.
