CVS Health is planning to exit its infusion services business. The company is planning to close or sell 29 related regional pharmacies in the coming months.

Shelly Bendit, senior manager, corporate communications at CVS Health provided Drug Store News with a statement that read, "We will discontinue offering infusion services for antibiotics, inotropic medications total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and other acute home infusion therapies. As we work to discontinue these services, we will coordinate with the patients, their providers and health plan on a safe transition to a new provider. New patient referrals for these treatments will no longer be accepted effective Oct. 8, 2024."

The statement continued, "We have not announced any workforce reductions at Coram. Any impacted colleagues would be informed in mid-November. Any potential workforce reductions would not happen until late January. This is a separate business decision than what was communicated by CVS Health on Sept. 30 about workforce reductions as a result of enterprise cost-saving strategies. We have let colleagues and customers know there will be impacts and we will support patients to ensure a smooth transition."

The statement added, "Ensuring continuity of care for our patients is our number one priority. We have a comprehensive transition plan in place for any patient affected by these changes. Our pharmacy teams will work directly with impacted patients to help them find a new provider and seamlessly transition their care. To meet the needs of an evolving health care landscape, Coram has established three national hub pharmacies to service patients throughout the country. These facilities in Mendota Heights, Minn., Malvern, Pa. and San Diego, Calif. will serve as dispensing hubs for Coram’s specialty medication infusion services and enteral nutrition services. We plan to close 29 regional pharmacies over the coming months, but are also exploring a possible sale of these assets."

"Coram will continue providing best-in-class infusion services for specialty medications and enteral nutrition. We will continue to provide infusion nursing services nationwide, offering our patients who receive specialty medication infusions with excellent care options in an infusion suite or in the comfort of their home."

The statement concluded, "As the healthcare space for infused medications has continued to evolve, we routinely review and assess Coram’s services to meet the growing needs of our company and our patients. Providers of infused medications have continued to face a challenging environment for their most highly specialized, complex services, and Coram has not been immune to these challenges. As such, we have reevaluated our service offerings."
