Food Lion highlights progress in sustainability initiatives

Ahead of Earth Day, which takes place on Monday, April 22, Food Lion is highlighting the strides it is making in its sustainability initiatives. While the omnichannel grocer is committed to nourishing its neighbors, it also prioritizes sustainability to the towns and cities it serves.

A snapshot of key accomplishments to date:

  • Through its hunger-relief platform, Food Lion Feeds, the grocer has helped nourish communities across its 10-state footprint in 2023 with fresh and shelf-stable food donationsdonating more than 182 million meals in 2023 and 1.2 billion meals since 2014;
  • Since 2000, Food Lion’s reduction in energy usage equates to the CO2 emissions of 123.1K homes’ electricity use for one year, charging 76.9 billion smartphones or converting 23.9M incandescent lightbulbs to LED;

In 2023, Food Lion recycled:

  • 18.8K tons of animal feed, anaerobic digestion and composting
  • 181.3K tons of cardboard and paper
  • 8.7K tons of plastic film, bags and bottles;
  • Since 2013, Food Lion has saved an estimated 26.1M plastic bags through sales of reusable bags;
  • Food Lion’s brands adhere to strict sustainability policies that address the environmental impact of their production (e.g., products like tea, coffee, cocoa, palm oil, wood fiber and seafood are held to industry-leading standards to ensure they’re sustainably sourced); and
  • Food Lion was awarded ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (the only company in the U.S. to receive the honor for 23 consecutive years).
