Food Lion wraps up CIAA Basketball Tournament

The grocer provided snacks to athletes and made a $200,000 donation in academic scholarships.

At the 2024 Food Lion CIAA Basketball Tournament in Baltimore, Md., Food Lion celebrated 30 years of partnership with the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the nation’s oldest historically Black athletic conference comprised of 13 Historically Black Colleges and Universities. All 13 HBCUs are within Food Lion’s operating area. Food Lion provided snacks to the student-athletes throughout the tournament.

Food Lion made a donation of $200,000 in academic scholarships to support CIAA students and student-athletes. Since 2004, Food Lion has donated more than $7.5 million in scholarships to CIAA schools.

Through the Score to Give More promotion, Food Lion Feeds donates 100 meals for every free throw made, up to 30,000 meals per participating college team.

  • Women’s Tournament: 320 Free Throws Made/Total: 32,000 Meals
  • Men’s Tournament: 357 Free Throws Made/Total: 35,700 Meals
  • Food Lion CIAA Tournament Grand TOTAL: 677 Free Throws Made/Total: 67,700 Meals

Through Food Lion Feeds, the company’s hunger-relief platform, Food Lion packed 500 bags of food for students and families at Lindale Middle School in Linthicum Heights, Md. Student volunteers, teachers and administrators joined Food Lion corporate and retail associates to pack and distribute the bags at a drive-thru food distribution. The bags included mandarin oranges, bananas, peanut butter, jelly, mac and cheese, fruit cups, cereal bars, canned chicken and tortillas, oatmeal, milk and cheese. 

Food Lion participated in the Career Expo, meeting with students to discuss corporate and retail opportunities across Food Lion’s 10-state footprint. The Talent Acquisition team led a workshop to engage with students and recent alumni, sharing the story of Food Lion’s brand strategy and culture and what sets the company apart as an employer in CIAA communities.

At Fan Fest, athletes, students, alumni and fans sampled Food Lion’s Home Meal Solutions and hot bar items such as wings, mozzarella sticks, chicken salad and potato cakes.

Food Lion associates presented trophies throughout the tournament to recognize each Player of the Game, as well as the tournament champions. Jay Moaveni, Food Lion store manager in Inwood, W.VA., was the 2023 Ralph W. Ketner Store Manager Excellence Award Division Winner for the Northen Division, which includes the tournament host city of Baltimore. He presented the 2024 CIAA Women's Tournament MVP trophy to Aniylah Bryant of Fayetteville State University.
