Giant Food’s distribution warehouse in Jessup, Md., which serves all of its 163 locations, is undergoing an expansion.

The expansion will add more than 95,000-sq-ft. to the facility, resulting in an increase in efficiency, as well as additional capacity for such high-demand categories as organics, fresh produce, meat, seafood, fresh cut florals and seasonal products, the Landover, Md.-based retailer said.

“The efficiency improvements and enhanced space for housing and distributing thousands of items at the warehouse will further our ability to grow to meet the needs of our communities,” Joe Urban, the vice president of distribution operations at Giant said. “We're committed to continuing to innovate our operations to bring the highest quality of products to our shoppers.”

Other improvements include space for cross-docking in order to make the most of storage areas, as well as efficiently transition items from inbound to outbound in once trip for key products carried in its stores.

In addition, the warehouse space also will feature the latest equipment and technology to manage high capacity operations, improved traffic flow and safety operating practices to be followed, the company said.

An end result of the expansion will create 30 new jobs across various positions. Construction will be completed and fully operational later this month.
