The McKesson RxOwnership team has partnered with the National Community Pharmacists Association to sponsor its tenth annual Ownership Workshop series, to cultivate community pharmacy ownership.

The Ownership Workshop takes place Oct. 24-26, ahead of the NCPA Annual Convention.

According to NCPA, more than 50% of past Ownership Workshop participants currently own their own pharmacy.

“This course provided me the tools and resources to build and grow my pharmacy business from the ground up. I was able to implement many strategies from the Ownership Workshop into my day-to-day workflow,” said Shahida Choudhry, pharmacist and owner of Palms Pharmacy. “It’s not just for potential owners. This course is for everyone. It’s really a Pharmacy Ownership 101 class and every independent pharmacy owner will benefit from the wealth of knowledge.”

RxOwnership supports the future of pharmacy ownership by giving pharmacists the knowledge, support and tools required to achieve their ownership goals. In the past year, RxOwnership assisted more than 725 owners in launching a new pharmacy. Since 2008, the RxOwnership team aided in the ownership-transfer process of 6,000 community pharmacies.

“Healthcare is rapidly evolving and this immersive course is the leverage pharmacy owners need to tackle buying, selling or starting their own pharmacy,” said Chris Cella, national vice president of RxOwnership. “Due to the nature of pharmacy – a highly regulated, complex system with a unique business model – hands-on help is required. We found the best way to equip owners with the knowledge they need is a three-day, intensive workshop with industry experts.”

Pharmacy experts will answer the nitty-gritty questions about the loan approval process, licensure agreements, creating a startup checklist, writing a business plan, designing an effective store layout and much more in this year’s Ownership Workshop. Attendees will learn what it takes to run a successful pharmacy or even pharmacies.

Attendees interested in buying, selling or starting a pharmacy will take away:

  • Expert guidance on key business issues
  • Insights into how the most successful pharmacy owners operate
  • A how-to guide for creating a financial analysis, adhering to legal requirements and applying for a loan when buying a pharmacy
  • Best practices and lessons learned from peers in community pharmacy
  • Store layout and niche ideas that can make or break profit margins

In addition to the three-day workshop, Cory Miller, vice president, RxOwnership West region, will present “How Can a Wholesaler Help You with Independent Pharmacy Ownership” during the NCPA Student Pharmacist Programming. McKesson also supports the NCPA Student Luncheon.
