Meijer is celebrating a huge milestone.

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer, which was opened in 1934 by Hendrik Meijer after purchasing $338.76 worth of merchandise on credit, is celebrating 85 years in business.

To commemorate the milestone, the retailer is offering an .85 cent promotion that will see various items on sale for various prices that end in .85.

"When my grandfather and dad opened their grocery store 85 years ago, they set themselves apart right from the start with a focus on their customers and an eye for innovation," the executive chairman, Hank Meijer said. "That focus gave the little grocery store a future. We are thankful for our customers who helped us along the way because without them, we would not be here."

In addition, the promotion will apply to each of Meijer’s stores and includes more than 4,000 such items as True Goodness Organic baby food or pouches, fresh whole chicken, apple cider, bell peppers, Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic oil, American Greeting cards and Xbox One consoles.
