BD introduces smaller needle for highly viscous drugs

7/25/2012

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — A division of Becton, Dickinson and Co. has introduced a thin-walled needle for injecting highly viscous drug formulations.

BD Medical announced Wednesday the introduction of the BD Hyflow needle, calling it an alternative to larger needles that could be more painful for patients receiving the highly viscous drugs that are becoming more common in drug pipelines. The Hyflow is a 27-gauge needle designed for use with BD's prefillable syringe systems that increases flow to facilitate use with auto injectors and infusers.

"One critical, but often overlooked factor in selecting a drug-delivery system is the needle," BD Medical Pharmaceutical Systems VP and general manager for the Americas Eric Borin said. "As the conduit for drugs to enter the body, and the critical interface with the patient, needles can have a proofed effect on the patient experience."
