NEW YORK — Goldman Sachs and Condé Nast on Tuesday released the 2017 Love List: Food, which took a applies their Love List Brand Affinity Index to the food category and the retailers shoppers prefer.
The study found that millennials are looking for healthy snacks, with 75% of snack brands on the list having a health focus. They also are one-stop shoppers, with their preferred food shopping locations also having purchasing options outside the food category.
In terms of top food shopping locations, Wal-Mart topped the list for millennial food enthusiasts surveyed, and Target came in second place among millennials. The top drug chain was CVS, which came in eighth among millennial food enthusiasts, followed by Walgreens at 10. Among a national sample, Walmart also held the top spot, with Costco coming in second place and Trader Joe’s in third. Among the national sample, CVS ranked 11th, ahead of Walgreens at 13th.
"Our Love List Brand Affinity Index is a strong indicator of next generation consumers' attitudes toward the retail experience, and among millennial food enthusiasts, we're seeing similar trends that surfaced in our fashion study — namely that brands shouldn't underestimate the powerful combination of convenience and authenticity,” Condé Nast chief marketing officer Pamela Drucker Mann said. "Millennial consumers are looking for good value, convenience and consistency, which is why we're seeing retailers like Wal-Mart and Target rise to the top of the list. However, when it comes to the brands they're choosing to purchase, like Kashi, Clif and Bear Naked, millennials are looking to brands that connect with them and fit into their lifestyles."
The top millennial brands on the Love List were San Pellegrino, Angie’s Haribo, Duncan Hines and Bertolli Frozen. Among a national sample, Nespresso came in first, followed by San Pellegrino, Starbucks, Ben & Jerry’s and Coca-Cola. The 2017 Next List saw millennials naming Oikos, Clif, Udi’s, Bear Naked and Kashi as their top five brands, and a national sample pointing to Siggi’s, Tates, Sahale Snacks, Odwalla and Fage as their top brands.
