Ferndale Healthcare: New Heliocare supplement offers sun protection

4/24/2013

FERNDALE, Mich. — A dietary supplement that helps protect skin against sun-related effects and aging? Yes, according to Ferndale Healthcare.

According to the company, an extract from a tropical fern called Polypodium leucotomos has been evaluated for more than 30 years by scientists and dermatologists in several countries, including the United States. When taken orally as a daily dietary supplement, by the brand name Heliocare marketed by Ferndale Healthcare, it has been shown to help maintain the skin's ability to protect against sun-related effects and aging. Heliocare harnesses the antioxidants in Polypodium leucotomos extract.

According to dermatologist Joel Cohen, director of AboutSkin Dermatology in Colorado, "Free radicals (reactive oxygen species) wreak havoc on our whole body. In the skin, they can damage cells, tissue and support structures. Sunscreen together with Heliocare helps to prevent propagation of free radicals."

"We are seeing more and more skin cancer among the U.S. population," stated Cohen. "And we are seeing people present at younger and younger ages, even around age 20. Skin cancer rates are climbing and 1-in-5 Americans will get some type of skin cancer in their lifetime."
