Giant-Carlisle donates to Second Harvest of the Lehigh Valley as part of 90th-anniversary donation push

CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores is donating $9,000 to a local food bank to celebrate its 90 years in operation, the supermarket chain said.

Giant said it would expand its "Living Here, Giving Here" community support program by spending 90 days donating to local food banks, in this case to the Second Harvest Food Bank, providing hunger relief throughout the Lehigh Valley. The chain has donated more than $150 million in money and products to charitable causes since 2005.

"Since Giant as founded in 1923, our commitment to being a good neighbor has been unwavering," Giant president Rick Herring said. "We are proud to be a leader in the fight against hunger, raising millions of dollars and donating thousands of pounds of food for hunger relief throughout our 90-year history. No one in the communities we serve should go hungry, and we will continue to support Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley on future efforts to eradicate hunger."

Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant is owned by Ahold USA, which also owns Giant Food of Landover, Md., and Stop & Shop, as well as the Peapod online grocery service.
