Jim Spencer, president of Kinney Drugs, has died following a long illness, the company said Tuesday.

Spencer began his career in retail in 1990 after graduating from Rutgers University’s business school, and joined Kinney Drugs in 2010 as director of retail operations. He worked his way through the ranks, holding the title of executive vice president of administrative support services for KPH Healthcare Services alongside being president of Kinney Drugs. He also served on the Kinney Drugs Foundation board of directors for many years, the company said.

“Jim was a tremendous leader who absolutely loved retail,” said Bridget-ann Hart, president and CEO of KPH Healthcare Services and president of Kinney Drugs. “He always challenged himself and his colleagues to be better in business while still preserving our unique culture. He was a friend to all of us and will be sorely missed.”

An avid golfer and Philadelphia Eagles fan, Spencer is survived by his wife, Lisa Spencer and two daughters. A funeral will be held March 8 following a period for friends and family to call from 9 a.m. to noon at the Thomas J. Pirro Funeral Home in Syracuse, N.Y. Kinney said cards and remembrances can be sent to the funeral home and contributions may be made to the Kinney Drugs Foundation.
