NACDS names Walgreens’ Gourlay as chairman

4/24/2017

The National Association of Chain Drug Stores on Monday elected new officers, one new executive committee member and two new board of directors members for the coming year, including Alex Gourlay, co-COO of Walgreens Boots Alliance and president of Walgreens, who will serve as the new chairman of the NACDS board of directors. Gourlay succeeds Martin Otto, chief merchant and CFO of H-E-B, who completed his term.

“We are delighted to welcome Alex as chairman of the NACDS board of directors,” said NACDS president and CEO Steve Anderson. “Alex has been highly effective as an NACDS officer, including his dedicated involvement in the NACDS RxIMPACT grassroots advocacy program, and his engagement on behalf of his company and on behalf of the industry at NACDS meetings and conferences throughout the year. He is highly engaged in the important work of advancing issues of importance to NACDS chain and associate members alike, and we value his leadership.”

During a Sunday morning speech, Otto told NACDS Annual Meeting attendees how much of a joy and privilege it was to serve as NACDS chairman.

“I’ve enjoyed the chance to work with Steve [Anderson] and his team. Steve, you and your team are a fantastic group, and I think you are the best association around. I can’t say enough to praise you.”

In addition to Gourlay’s appointment, Mark Panzer, SVP pharmacy, health and wellness of Albertsons, was elected NACDS vice chairman, and Helena Foulkes, EVP of CVS Health and president of CVS Pharmacy, was elected NACDS treasurer. Each officer will serve a one-year term. In addition, Foulkes was elected to the NACDS Executive Committee.

Two new board members also were elected to serve three-year terms — Brian Nightengale, president of Good Neighbor Pharmacy, and Michael K. Bloom, CEO of Fred’s Pharmacy.
