NGA survey shows majority of consumers want stores to make nutrition, health info readily available

2/19/2009

ARLINGTON, Va. According to a survey recently released by the National Grocers Association, the majority of consumers want their local grocery stores to make nutrition and health information available to shoppers, but housing a pharmacy to deliver that information is not as important.

According to the survey, 72% of consumers listed the availability of nutrition and health information as “somewhat important” or “very important.” Only 32% of respondents felt similarly about pharmacy, and of those, only 10% listed an in-store pharmacy as “very important.”

And while that number looking for a pharmacy in their grocery store is relatively low, it is climbing. “This is up from 29% who said it last year (9% very, 20% somewhat),” NGA stated. “Older respondents account for half of those who say pharmacy presence does matter (40% aged 50-64, 9% aged 65 and older in the current survey). Needless to say, as the aging Baby Boomer population of 76 million enters “senior status,” in 2010 we would expect this number to continue to grow, mirroring the 65+ population growth.”

For nutrition and wellness information, women accounted for 86% of the latest “very important” respondents.
