Price Chopper celebrates 75th anniversary

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. On Saturday and Sunday Nov. 17-18, Price Chopper will wrap up its 75th anniversary celebration with a founder’s day weekend, according to the pressrepublican.com.

“We are one of the few family managed businesses in our industry left at this point,” Price Chopper vice president of public relations and consumer services Mona Golub said. “What started as a single public service market started by a (Russian) immigrant has blossomed into a vital chain of progressive stores in a very competitive industry.”

According to Price Chopper’s website, the company started in 1932 when brothers Ben and Bill opened the Public Service Market, a grocery store that served as a model for today’s supermarkets. In 1972, they opened the first official Price Chopper store and in 1973, they changed the name of all of their stores to Price Chopper.

There are presently 116 stores with 24,000 associates in six Northeastern states including such New York locations as Plattsburgh, Lake Placid, Malone and Champlain.

For Founder’s Day weekend, in-store announcements will include some history about the family and prize giveaways such as gift cards and products.
