The Food and Drug Administration has proposed a new regulation for sunscreen products, including a new UVA rating system and sun warning information.

The FDA is proposing a ratings system for UVA sunscreen products on a scale of one to four stars. If a product does not provide at least a low level (one star) of protection, the FDA would require that the product bear “no UVA protection” marketing on the front label.

In addition, a warning statement in the drug facts box of products would be required of all sunscreen product manufacturers, warning of the risk of skin cancer, premature skin aging and other skin damage.

The proposed rule also revises the existing SPF (UVB) testing procedures, allows new combinations of active ingredients and asks for comments on the issue of nanoparticles.

FDA is accepting comments on the new rule until Nov. 26, 2007.

CoverGirl will introduce in November its LashBlast Mascara, which uses an advanced volumizing brush and volumizing formula to lengthen and thicken lashes.

The moldtrusion brush, seen on CoverGirl LashExact Mascara and VolumeExact Mascara, gets a 25 percent bigger core with LashBlast Mascara to hold more mascara. It also features 67 percent more bristles than VolumeExact to help create even coverage.
