Reports: Amazon may expand fresh foods, lockers

6/10/2013

NEW YORK — Amazon is looking to expand its grocery-delivery and locker businesses, according to published reports.

The Seattle Times reported Monday that the online retailer had quietly expanded its AmazonFresh service in Los Angeles and would add service in San Francisco later this year, following a six-year pilot in Seattle, where Amazon is based. According to the Times, Amazon is looking to maximize its business if it has to collect state sales taxes; the company is supporting legislation to overturn a 1992 Supreme Court ruling forbidding Internet retailers to collect state sales taxes unless they have physical operations within the state.

The company may also be expanding its drop boxes, called Amazon Lockers, which it has been testing for a few years now. The lockers allow customers to have their goods delivered there instead of to their homes.
