Schnuck Markets to make stores 'green' in St. Louis market

4/23/2009

ST. LOUIS Schnuck Markets announced last week that two of its new stores in the St. Louis area would include green building features.

Last fall, the supermarket chain opened a prototype store in Newburgh, Ind., that was almost 50% larger than the one it replaced, but had the same utility costs.

All new stores, including the ones in downtown St. Louis and the Des Peres area, will feature energy-efficient lighting, water-efficient plumbing fixtures and accessories and an energy management system to control lighting, air conditioning, heating and refrigeration. The Des Peres store will open later this year.

“Green design is good design,” Schnucks director of facilities engineering Ross Hutsel stated. “We must be good stewards for future generations.”
