Trump nominates Acosta for Labor Secretary post

2/16/2017

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump nominated Alex Acosta as his choice for Labor Secretary, according to several news reports.

Acosta served as assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division under President George W. Bush, selected by the president in August 2003. He was also a member of the National Labor Relations Board and served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division. Most recently, he was the dean of Florida International University College of Law.

Trump’s first choice for Labor Secretary was Andy Puzder, CEO of CKE Restaurants, which owns Hardee's and Carl's Jr. However, Puzder withdrew his name from consideration from the post after facing criticism from Democrats for a few factors, most notably his opposition to raising the minimum wage.
