Walgreens rolls Redbox video kiosks into two NYC stores

3/5/2009

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill. A rising automated DVD rental company has taken a bite out of the Big Apple.

Redbox has installed its first two movie-rental kiosks in Manhattan, according to reports.

Walgreens began testing the kiosks that rent DVDs for $1 per day in about 50 stores in Chicago and Houston in 2006, and expanded that test in November 2007 to 200 stores in Phoenix and Columbus, Ohio.

Last October, Redbox filed a lawsuit against Universal Studios Home Entertainment, plus three Universal affiliates in a Delaware Federal Court, alleging that Universal’s new distribution terms would block redbox from being able to rent out Universal Studios DVD titles for 45 days following public release.
