Wegmans to award $5 million in employee scholarships for upcoming school year

6/8/2012

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program will award college tuition assistance to 1,686 employees, totaling $5.1 million for the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year — the largest number of scholarships ever awarded by Wegmans in a single year, the grocer reported Thursday.

Since the program began in 1984, more than 26,500 Wegmans employees have been awarded scholarships totaling $85 million.

“We want to help our people learn and grow so they can have success in reaching their goals,” stated Wegmans president Colleen Wegman. “We’re especially pleased to see the number of scholarships grow and to help a greater number of employees on the path to higher education.”

Part-time employee scholarship recipients are eligible to receive up to $1,500 a year for four years (a maximum of $6,000), and full-time employees can receive up to $2,200 a year for four years (up to $8,800 total). No limit is placed on the number of scholarships awarded each year, and no restrictions are made on a student’s course of study.

Many scholarship winners have stayed with Wegmans after college, pursuing careers within the company.
