Wegmans honored for energy savings

LEXINGTON, Mass. Wegmans was one of 10 organizations honored in May as a “Northeast Business Leader for Energy Efficiency” by Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships, the grocer announced last week.

Wegmans was nominated by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and was selected for recognition based upon its commitment to achieving energy savings through cost-effective energy-efficiency investments; addressing comprehensive changes in major energy systems; improving energy performance through operational practices and management level support; and demonstrating leadership to advance energy efficiency.

Some of the energy-saving strategies implemented by Wegmans included:

• A comprehensive retrofit of all lighting systems, providing more light to stores at half the previous cost; this included the use of high-performance T8 fixtures, high-efficiency fluorescent lamps and LEDs in freezer cases and exit signs;
• The installation of high-efficiency HVAC systems; and
• The installation of interval meters on equipment to control energy use.

As a result of these improvements, Wegmans has achieved annual cost savings of more than $1.4 million, the company stated.
