Yakult introduces probiotic dairy drink for good digestion

8/26/2008

TORRANCE, Calif. Probiotics—also known as “friendly” bacteria—may provide relief for some people with digestive system problems, according to probiotic drink manufacturer Yakult U.S.A., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Yakult Honsha.

Yakult’s eponymous dairy drink contains the bacteria Lactobacillus casei Shirota, which helps balance the digestive system and regulate motility. Yakult calls L. casei Shirota the first cultured probiotic bacteria in the world.

“We believe that our probiotic, L. casei Shirota, has unique properties that promote good health,” said Teruo Tabuchi, vice president and chief operating officer of Yakult U.S.A. “With solid scientific evidence and over 70 years of experience, we are confident that Yakult will positively impact our customers.”

Digestive system problems result in about 33 million visits to doctors and 3.6 million hospital visits every year, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
