AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour celebrates 2 millionth health screening

11/12/2010

DEERFIELD, Ill. — A national mobile health screening tour developed by a drug store chain and a nonprofit, nonpartisan social welfare organization has reached a milestone.

The AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour will celebrate this week its two-millionth free health screening. During its two-millionth milestone week, the AARP/Walgreens Wellness Tour will celebrate by serving residents in the following cities: Houston and El Paso, Texas; New Orleans, La.; Pensacola, Miami, Largo and Jacksonville, Fla.; San Jose, Calif.; and Bullhead City, Ariz.

The tour, which first kicked off in April 2009, touts a goal of providing more than $60 million worth of free health screenings by April 2011. The free screenings — which include total cholesterol levels, blood pressure, bone density, glucose levels, waist circumference and body mass index — are valued at more than $140 and will help provide adults with a critical foundation for early disease detection and prevention.

“We are pleased that important health screenings are being provided at a time when many still cannot afford preventive health care,” said A. Barry Rand, AARP’s CEO. “These screenings by Walgreens will go a long way in increasing the chances for early detection of chronic disease and other potential health problems.”
