Amazon has made another pharmacy play. The company will be acquiring online pharmacy PillPack, bringing on board its pre-sorted medication dose packaging and home delivery offerings.
“PillPack’s visionary team has a combination of deep pharmacy experience and a focus on technology,” said Jeff Wilke, Amazon CEO, worldwide consumer. “PillPack is meaningfully improving its customers’ lives, and we want to help them continue making it easy for people to save time, simplify their lives, and feel healthier. We’re excited to see what we can do together on behalf of customers over time.”
The acquisition of Boston-based PillPack is the latest effort from Amazon to make headway in the pharmacy world. The company had previously begun acquiring wholesale licenses in various states. Though Amazon told regulators their plan did not involve wholesale, the move has had the industry wondering
how the e-commerce behemoth might make a pharmacy play.
PillPack co-founder and CEO TJ Parker said, “Together with Amazon, we are eager to continue working with partners across the healthcare industry to help people throughout the United States who can benefit from a better pharmacy experience.”
