APhA announces 2017 Awards and Honors Program recipients

WASHINGTON — The American Pharmacists Association on Monday announced the selection of the recipients of its 2017 Awards and Honors Program. The honorees will be officially recognized at the APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Francisco, which is slated for March 24-27, 2017. 


 


APhA honored 12 people with profession-wide awards: 


 



  • Daniel Husser of Newotwn Square, Pa. was awarded the Remington Honor, which is considered American pharmacy’s highest honor and recognizes distinguished service on behalf of American pharmacy during the preceding years, culminating in the past year or during a long period of outstanding activity or fruitful achievement;


  • Bakersfield, Calif.’s Clark Gustafson was awarded the Hugo H. Schaefer Award, which recognizes outstanding voluntary contributions to the organization, the profession, and society;


  • John Forbes of Urbandale, IA was awarded the Hubert H. Humphrey Award, reserved for APhA members who have made major contributions in government and legislative service at the local, state or national level;


  • Michael Blaire of Scottsdale, Ariz. was honored with the Good Government Pharmacist-of-the-Year Award, which recognizes an individual pharmacist actively contributing to the community through their involvement in the political process;


  • Honorary Membership was awarded to Eileen Gans of Brigantine, NJ. The APhA board of trustees Honorary confers honorary membership on individuals within the pharmacy profession or not whose activities and achievements have had a significant positive impact on public health, the pharmacy profession, and its practitioners;


  • Philip Burgess of Chicago was named Honorary President, which is conferred by the APhA on a member who has made significant contributions to the association;


  • Midlothian, Va.’s Thomas Reinders was award the Gloria Niemeyer Francke Leadership Mentor Award, given to someone who has promoted and encouraged pharmacists to attain leadership positions through example and by acting as a role model and mentor;


  • Pfizer was awarded the H.A.B. Dunning Award, given in recognition of exemplary contribution to APhA and the practice of pharmacy by a pharmaceutical manufacturer, provider of support products or service, or other entities such as wholesalers, chain corporations, etc.; 


  • The Distinguished Federal Pharmacist Award, given to a pharmacist who distinguishes themselves and the profession through outstanding contributions in federal pharmacy practice that results in improvements in health for their patients and the nation, was awarded to John Spain of Columbia, Md.;


  • Chelsea Anderson of Indianapolis, Ind. received the Distinguished New Practitioner Award, given to a new practitioner, the first five years of practice demonstrating distinctive achievements in mentorship, service and commitment to the pharmacy profession;


  • Laurie Fleming of Jackson, Miss. was given the Community Pharmacy Residency Excellence in Precepting Award, which recognizes a community pharmacy residency director or preceptor who has demonstrated excellence in precepting, mentoring, leadership and community pharmacy residency program administration; and


  • The Generation Rx Award of Excellence, awarded to a pharmacist that’s demonstrated a commitment to substance abuse education, was awarded to Sarah Melton of Johnson City, Tenn.



The association also named fellows of the APhA, who are membesr of the either the APhA - Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management, or APhA-APPM, or the APhA - Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, or APhA-APRS with a minimum of 10 years of professional experience. Fellows are members who have demonstrated exemplary professional achievements and service to the profession through involvement with APhA or other national, state or local pharmacy organizations.

The APhA-APPM awarded Mary Ann Kliethermes of Downers Grove, Ill. the Daniel B. Smith Practice excellence award — given to a pharmacy practitioner who has distinguished themselves and the profession through outstanding performance and achievements. The APhA-APPM also honored four individuals with Distinguished Achievement Awards:


 



  • The Pharmacy Practice award was given to Jennifer Rodis of Columbus, Ohio, which is given to an individual who has developed and/or implemented an innovative, original pharmacy program or service that is significant to their area of practice;


  • The Service award was given to Mechanicsville, Va.’s Sharon S. Gatewood, which recognizes an individual who has made significant or sustained contributions in the area of service to their community, their state or at the national level; 


  • Kenneth Breslow of Buckeye, Ariz. was awarded the William H. Briner Distinguished Achievement Award in Nuclear Pharmacy Practice, which recognizes an APhA-APPM member who has made significant or sustained contributions to the practice of nuclear pharmacy; and 


  • The Pharmacy Management Excellence Award was given to Sebastian, Fla.’s Theresa Tolle. The award recognizes an APhA member who has distinguished themselves and the profession through outstanding performance in the area of pharmacy management.



 


The APhA-APRS gave out three awards:


 



  • Laura Shane-McWhorter of Sandy, Utah was given the Clinical Research Paper Award, which promotes and encourages high-quality clinical research or practice-based research in the clinical sciences by recognizing an original research article in this area which has been published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA). Shane-McWhorter was selected in recognition of her paper, “Pharmacist-provided diabetes management and education via a telemonitoring program,” which was published in the September 2015 issue of JAPhA.


  • The Ebert Prize was awarded to Magnus Ölander of Uppsala, Sweden. The award recognizes the author of the best report of original investigation of a medicinal substance published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the past year. Ölander was selected in recognition of his paper, “The Proteome of Filter-Grown Caco-2 Cells With a Focus on Proteins Involved in Drug Disposition,” published in the January 9, 2016, online issue; and 


  • Brandon J. Patterson of Philadelphia was awarded the Wiederholt Prize, which recognizes the best paper published in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, within the past two calendar years, describing original investigation in the areas of economic, social or administrative sciences. Patterson was selected in recognition of his paper, “Rural access to clinical pharmacy services,” published in the September 2014 issue of the JAPhA.
