AstraZeneca grants Ranbaxy authorization to produce generic Prilosec

GURAGON, India, and PRINCETON, N.J. Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals announced an agreement yesterday with AstraZeneca that allows it to launch an authorized generic version of AstraZeneca’s stomach medication of Prilosec 40 mgs.

The drug, whose generic name is omeprazole, is indicated for the treatment of acid-related disease, including gastric ulcer and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

According to IMS, Prilosec 40 mg had sales in the U.S. of $204.2 million, for the year ended March 2008.
