Author to tackle Rx counterfeiting at specialty pharmacy conference

2/23/2009

MERIDIAN, Miss. Author and pharmaceutical industry expert Katherine Eban will address the dangers of drug counterfeiting at an annual conference next month for the home infusion and specialty pharmacy industries.

Eban, widely known in pharmaceutical circles for her book Dangerous Doses, will be the keynote speaker for the Vital Care Annual Conference in Nashville March 20. The event is expected to attract some 200 pharmacy owners, managers and trading partners to the Hilton Downtown Nashville, March 19-22.

Vital Care claims a position as the nation’s largest franchisor of home infusion and specialty pharmacy disease management, with more than 100 locations in 17 states.

In Dangerous Doses, Eban documents a successful campaign by Florida law enforcement officers that uncovered a network of corrupt individuals that inserted thousands of doses of counterfeit, adulterated and mislabeled product into the pharmaceutical supply chain in the late 90’s.

“Katherine’s important work has demonstrated that counterfeits are not a one-time fluke but rather a consequence of America’s distribution system,” said Patrick Schmidt, CEO of FFF Enterprises, the distributor of flu vaccine and other specialty pharmaceuticals that is sponsoring Eban’s presentation.
