Avella Specialty Pharmacy adds medical advisor

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Avella Specialty Pharmacy has added Dr. Joel V. Brill as a medical advisor, the organization announced Friday. Brill will bring more than 30 years of clinical and leadership experience, as well as expertise in value-based care and advanced payment models to the company.

“Specialty pharmacy is an important segment of health care, especially as organizations look for new ways to improve quality, demonstrate value, and provide cost-effective care,” Brill said. “Avella is known for its strong foundation of clinical excellence and emphasis on quality improvement and patient-focused care, which is essential for payer and provider organizations seeking to deliver value-based collaborative care that meets today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.”

Brill is board-certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine and is Predictive Health’s chief medical officer. He has formerly served as a medical director for several managed care organizations and has run independent practice organizations and physician-hospital organizations. Brill is also skilled in implementing value-driven health programs, the company said.

At Avella, he will provide insight into developing its newest clinical programs and maintaining the evidence-based care practices within the company’s specialties. He will also serve as the “voice of the provider” as Avella enters new clinical specialties and looks to partner with health systems, hospitals, physicians and payers.

“Specialty pharmacies have become such a critical part of a patient’s care team, which makes clinical leadership in our organization just as important as it would be within a hospital or health system,” Avella CEO Rebecca Shanahan said. “Dr. Brill’s extensive knowledge and understanding of the complex healthcare landscape will be invaluable as we develop cutting-edge clinical programs as well as long-term strategic partnerships.”
