WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health announced Tuesday that it had launched its medication synchronization service, ScriptSync, for patients with multiple prescriptions. The service, currently available at all CVS/pharmacy stores and available through mail in 2016, allows patients to pick up all their medication in a monthly pharmacy visit and manage their prescriptions online.
For CVS Health, rolling out ScriptSync is one way of taking aim at adherence, which is one of the largest challenges and costs associated with the health care system. Moreover, according to research from CVS Health’s Research Institute, adherence tends to go down when patients have a more complicated medication regimen.
“Medication adherence is a complex public health challenge, and better adherence can improve health outcomes and lower overall health care costs for both patients and payors,” CVS Health’s EVP and chief medical officer Troyen A. Brennan said. “Our research shows that people with chronic diseases taking multiple medications may make numerous trips to the pharmacy each month for refills, which makes it harder for them to stay on track with different fill schedules and take them regularly as prescribed. ScriptSync is one more way that we can work together with our patients to make medication adherence easier as we help people on their path to better health.”
ScriptSync was developed as a result of the company’s research, and its pilot program saw those with multiple, ongoing prescriptions increase their adherence, and the service is aimed at increasing patients’ ability to manage the medication they pick up. Those enrolled can see their prescriptions and add or remove scripts from ScriptSync online whenever they want. They can also change pickup location and date through the ScriptSync site.
“As a pharmacy innovation company, CVS Health is focused on using our technology and scale to deliver patient-centered pharmacy care and innovative digital solutions to address medication non-adherence,” CVS Health’s VP and chief digital officer Brian Tilzer said. “In fact, the online support feature of ScriptSync was developed in our Boston-based Digital Innovation Lab to help make viewing and updating prescription information quick, easy and convenient to give our ScriptSync patients more control over managing their health.”
