Discount drug card now available in New Jersey

2/26/2008

TRENTON, N.J. The prescription savings program that has already been approved and actively used in 19 states has now been launched in New Jersey. The state discount card program offers patients that don’t have prescription coverage a large amount of savings on their medications.

According to published reports, the program is supported by drug companies and about 60,000 chain and independent pharmacies. The card, unlike other discount programs, does not have income limits or any registration or monthly fees.

Since 2006, when the program was launched in Louisiana it is reported that consumers have saved an approximate $103 million on medications. The cards cover about 95 percent of all prescription drugs, with the exception of brand-new drugs, according to Francesco Ciccone, director of drug card programs in New Jersey, New York and Florida.

Pharmacies that have participated in this new discount card include Walgreens, CVS, Eckerd Drugs, Drug Fair and Rite Aid. Also participating are discount stores such as Kmart and Target, and grocery chains including A&P, Publix, ShopRite and Acme.
