Eli Lilly settles with whistleblower for $100,000

9/18/2007

INDIANAPOLIS Eli Lilly has agreed on a settlement with a former expert witness that leaked documents in a lawsuit over the product liability of the schizophrenia and bipolar disorder drug Zyprexa.

According to Eli Lilly, David Egilman, an associate professor of clinical and community health at Brown University, admitted violating a protective order in the Zyprexa litigation and illegally passing confidential Eli Lilly documents to Alaska attorney James Gottstein. “Dr. Egilman acknowledged that his selective leaks of these documents, excerpts of which were published and discussed in a series of articles in The New York Times, presented an incomplete picture of Lilly’s activities,” the company said.

Eli Lilly has agreed not to pursue criminal and civil penalties against Egilman and said it would donate his payment of $100,000 to a charity called the International Center for Clubhouse Development.
