Former Surgeon General Carmona joins PerceptiMed BOD

8/3/2015

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Healthcare technology company PerceptiMed announced in mid-July the appointment of the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Richard Carmona, to its board of directors, effective Aug. 1.

"PerceptiMed's proprietary technology prevents catastrophic medication errors and will save lives," Carmona said. "I strongly believe in the mission of the company and the capabilities of Dr. Jacobs and his team to bring this technology into every retail pharmacy, hospital, and long-term care center in the United States to further enhance patient safety."

Carmona was surgeon general from 2002 to 2006 and served as a vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

“To say we are thrilled to have Dr. Carmona as an active member of our board of directors would be an understatement,” Dr. Alan Jacobs, founder and CEO of PerceptiMed, said. “Adding a board member with Dr. Carmona’s experience and expertise provides unparalleled credibility for PerceptiMed and our direction moving forward.”

Carmona spoke about improving patient and provider safety at the 2015 Patient Safety Summit and appeared on "The Morning Blend," where he discussed preventing medication errors in hospitals and long-term care centers, PerceptiMed said.

A U.S. Army Special Forces Vietnam veteran, Carmona is also a distinguished professor at the University of Arizona and at The Ohio State University, according to PerceptiMed. He also serves as president of the nonprofit Canyon Ranch Institute and as the director of three publicly traded companies, with 30 years of experience with the Pima County Sheriff’s Office in Tucson, Ariz.
