Giant Eagle to participate in precision medicine research program

Giant Eagle Pharmacy and University of Pittsburgh’s School of Pharmacy and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute are teaming up to give Western Pennsylvanians an easy and convenient way to become part of the largest, precision medicine research program of its kind in U.S. history.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the All of Us research program aims to create a large and diverse database for use by researchers who are developing medical breakthroughs and investigating ways to advance individualized prevention, treatment, and care.

“Giant Eagle Pharmacy is always searching for ways to better engage our patients and the communities in which we operate,” senior director of new business development Adam Zakin, Sr. said.

Zakin Sr. continued, “Providing CTSI with a private space within our stores and presenting the community with the opportunity to be part of this groundbreaking research program aligns with our mission to improve people's everyday lives and well-being. Precision medicine is the future of treating and preventing disease based on where we live, how we live and our genetics.”

“Pitt Pharmacy is proud to partner with the CTSI and Giant Eagle for the All of Us Research Program, which is a truly groundbreaking initiative,” said Dean Patricia Kroboth of the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. “Community pharmacies are a destination where people access and engage in opportunities to improve health, including how their genetics may affect their medication use experience.”

“Our nationwide goal is to gather one million participants who vary in race, age, gender, location, lifestyle, and levels of health,” CTSI director Steven Reis said. “In our area, the supermarket offers the ideal setting to interact with people of these varied backgrounds, and we are excited for the opportunity to engage the community in this historic study. We are grateful that Giant Eagle sees the value in this pioneering study and the long-term value it can bring to members of the community.”

Becoming an All of Us participant is easy and is open to individuals who are at least 18 years old, regardless of health status. Those interested can call 412-383-2737 or 1-800-664-0480 to schedule an appointment at a participating Giant Eagle Pharmacy, one of the All of Us standing clinics, or they can stop by a mobile engagement center while they are already shopping in the store. The on-site process can take less than 30 minutes if the volunteer completes the online consent forms and a brief medical history before he or she arrives to provide blood and urine samples.
