Mainstay reference text “The Merck Manual” has gotten its first update since 2011 with the publication of its 20th edition. The manual, from Kenilworth, N.J.-based Merck, weighs in at roughly 6 lbs., but the company also has made it pocket-sized through a free mobile app, as well as built out a multimedia desktop version.
“‘The Merck Manual’ has always served as the initial stop on the road to understanding for physicians and other healthcare professionals encountering a topic for the first time or for the first time in a long time,” editor-in-chief Robert Porter said. “Even in this digital age, the book still plays the same crucial role, providing the authoritative information necessary to make the healthcare professional ‘master of the situation.’”
The 3,584-page manual includes a detailed index and page-specific cross-references, with each chapter summarized by key points. It also features a 16-page color insert to help with visual recognition of common skin, eye and mouth disorders, and more than 300 tables and figures that were contributed to by more than 350 experts and reviewed by an independent editorial board. Merck said it also focuses on current issues with public health implications, including school bullying, domestic violence and elder abuse, as well as a discussion of injuries caused by mass casualty weapons, including biological and chemical agents.
The 20th edition of “The Merck Manual” has a list price of $79.95 and can be purchased at bookstores or merckbooks.com.
