Pharmacy pioneer Bruce Kneeland selects 8 road trip pharmacies

Eight pharmacies have been selected to be part of a major pharmacy road trip to be taken by pharmacy veteran Bruce Kneeland later this spring. During the trip, titled "Some of The Best in the Rocky Mountain West,"  Kneeland will see firsthand the services these pharmacies offer that contribute to their success.

The pharmacies selected, in order of their visit are:

  1. Melrose Pharmacy in Phoenix

  2. Chino Valley Pharmacy in Chino Valley, Ariz.

  3. Hurricane Family Pharmacy in Hurricane, Utah

  4. The Apothecary Shoppe in Salt Lake City

  5. Harmons Grocery Store Pharmacy in Farmington, Utah

  6. Ed Snell's Pharmacy in Pocatello, Idaho

  7. Elk Horn Pharmacy in Boulder, Mont.

  8. Vic's Family Pharmacy in Nampa, Idaho


Kneeland will start in Phoenix and drive north following the general path of U.S. Hwy 89. The highway, often called, “America’s most scenic highway", runs for nearly 2,000 miles and goes through several major National Parks including, Zion's, Yellowstone and Glacier. The pharmacies selected represent a cross-section of pharmacy types including inner-city locations, female-owned pharmacies, a 20-unit grocery store with pharmacy chain, a new pharmacy achieving remarkable success, and a pharmacy in an extremely rural area operating a telepharmacy.

The trip is being sponsored by five companies committed to the success of community pharmacy.

  •  American Associated Pharmacies, a group purchasing organization based in Scottsboro, Ala.

  • GRx Marketing, a boutique marketing services company based in West Des Moines, Iowa

  • FlavoRx, the medication flavoring company based in Columbia, Md.

  • PioneerRx Pharmacy Software, based in Shreveport, La.

  • Western States Pharmacy Coalition, a GPO based in Vancouver, Wash.


Kneeland reports this is his 10th road trip. At age 71 he also suspects this will be his last. Kneeland said the purpose of all his road trips is to document and share ideas that will inspire pharmacy owners and managers to try something new. To help with that he pays careful attention in the selection process to insure the reader is exposed to different ideas from each pharmacy with little overlap in what the pharmacies are doing to appeal to consumers. He says that picking a specific geographic area and using the road trip motif seems to attract more interest from readers for his formal report and blog posts.

Previous Road Trips have seen him travel Route 66, follow the Lewis and Clark Trail and visit pharmacies in Alaska. His first trip saw him put his big toe in the Atlantic Ocean and then drive across the country ending on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Counting the eight pharmacies included in this trip Kneeland will have visited 110 pharmacies under the Road Trip banner since 2008.
